Hotel Palomar Washington DC has been recognized as one of the Top 10 Luxury Hotels in the U.S. by TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice for 2011, yet it's a family-welcoming place as well.

On a recent visit, I found this trendy Dupont Circle boutique hotel had an "Art In Motion" slogan that actually appeals to all ages. Guests are greeted by the dramatic two-story lobby and niches of eclectic and colorful objets d'art, geometric marble flooring, a sort of French Deco look and exotic woods.

The art theme is played out in several fun ways, from bold, brightly colored decor to sculpture in the lobby and rooms. The hotel's partnership with the Smithsonian and Phillips collection encourages curators to stop by the free nightly Managers Reception and tell guests about the latest shows.

In keeping with this artistic theme, I was told there were "art supplies" available in the minibar. Since they weren't in my room, I inquired at the Front Desk, where a clerk said, "Hmm. I don't think so." Still, it's a great thought (and you probably brought along your own kids' art supplies, right?)

What they do have at the Kimpton Palomar is a day spa, workout room, and an outdoor pool and fenced-in deck off the 2nd floor that certainly appeal. And like all the Kimptons, those jungle print bathrobes hanging in each closet, sized for kids and parents.

The Palomar is conveniently situated within walking distance of Georgetown, giving families a wide choice of restaurants for an evening. out.  Rooms are among the largest I've seen in a DC hotel -- or any hotel for that matter -- especially the corner rooms with enough floor space to accommodate a queen bed, plus two rollaway beds and a crib.

The hotel's exceptionally friendly service was evident throughout my stay, and it was noteworthy. One colleague whispered that he'd missed the nightly Manager's Cocktail Party, so the front desk gave him two vouchers for free drinks at the bar.  Another told me that when she arrived early, before her room was ready, the Front Desk staff ordered coffee from their restaurant for her and asked her to relax in the lobby. The staff is also ready to help guests discover things like hidden shopping gems, off-the-beaten-path cafés, or hot new Zumba classes. Touches like this are what make a family remember a hotel long after they've returned home.

Combine all this with the amenities and services expected of a 4-star hotel in Washington DC - flat screen TVs, complimentary high-speed WiFi Internet access for Kimpton InTouch members, complimentary evening wine reception, complimentary morning coffee and tea in the living room.

For this season, their Holiday Package allows guests to choose their own perks, and it's just $1 more than their best available rate (at $180/N prior to Christmas.)  The offer is valid for stays through Dec. 31, 2011 (Kimpton often has great deals though) and gives you:

 *  2 free cocktails of your choice per night
